The material set is only relevent for the TerrainVolume (the smooth volumes) and does not apply to the ColoredCubesVolume (the cubic volume).

The cubes do not support a material - they only store a single color value. The smooth TerrainVolume
does store a material but you are not working with this (right?). There is no 'material index' when working with cubes (it is not like Minecraft).
You can probably apply an Unreal material to the cubes, but the only input will be the color (no texture, etc) from Cubiquity.

I am not quite clear on your question. You can set the color and alpha for any voxel, and you can use the alpha to control whether the voxel is visible.
