I do think you should test the example program if you can as it helps narrow down the problem. On Linux it should be easy, but on Windows you'll need Qt and I realise that can be more tricky. Failing that, maybe you just copy the example and comment out all the rendering code, etc? It's only the call to execute that you care about.
